Interview: Ron Alexander

How and when did you join Zurich Instruments?

I’m originally from Louisiana and studied physics at Southern University and A&M College before moving to Harvard University for my PhD, where I worked on digital holographic microscopy and low-temperature physics. After completing graduate school in 2020, I joined Zurich Instruments. I wanted a role where I could use my scientific training while staying engaged with the academic community, and being based in the Boston area made the position an excellent fit for me.

What does your job look like, and what is the most important aspect of it?

I support researchers throughout their entire journey with our instruments, from understanding their measurement challenges to helping them succeed after installation. I also work closely with long-term partners to guide projects, anticipate needs, and make sure they get the most value from our technology.

The core of my work is translating complex technical requirements into clear solutions. My own experience relying on knowledgeable experts during my research years shaped how I approach this. I aim to be that resource for the people who come to us.

What is the most memorable Zurich Instruments moment that stayed with you?

Our yearly company conferences in Switzerland stand out the most. The conversations with colleagues from around the world are energizing. The landscape is amazing and I appreciate how many talented people contribute to what we do.

How do you spend your free time?

I bake often, especially pastry, and I try stay involved in playing competitive trading card games at my local board game shop. For downtime, I travel with my wife and look for new escape rooms to try.
