Zurich Instruments Introduces a 50 MHz PLL

The technology leader has set a new standard for PLL in AFM applications

Zurich Instruments has today introduced two new options for the HF2LI lock-in amplifier.

The HF2LI-PLL phase-locked loop is the first new option; it includes the addition of a programmable digital PLL. It has a unique frequency range of 1 Hz to 50 MHz and a maximum bandwidth in excess of 100 kHz. With this product Zurich Instruments offers the world's fastest fully digital PLL for atomic force microscopy (AFM). Users will now be able to operate cantilevers at higher frequencies, increase scan speeds, produce better images, and push detection limits. Legacy interfaces enable the HF2LI-PLL to replace lower performance PLLs in existing AFM setups.

The HF2LI-MOD AM/FM modulation is the second new option; this allows for multi-modal cantilever operation with direct demodulation of the measured AM (amplitude modulation) and FM (frequency modulation) signals. This option is particularly useful for the precise measurement of AM and FM modulation schemes, thus when either the amplitude or the frequency is periodically changing. Technically this is carried out through time integration on the sidebands of a carrier signal. This option provides an easy to use, intuitive single-box solution for AFM and MEMS oscillators.

These new products are available immediately. Presentations will take place during 3 major conferences in the course of this month, including the March meeting of the American Physical Society at the Oregon Convention Centre (Portland, USA), the annual meeting of the German Physics Society DPG (Regensburg, Germany), and the Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Applied Physics (Kanagawa, Japan).

Zurich Instruments is a technology leader in the development and sales of advanced test & measurement instruments for dynamic signal analysis. These devices are used in many fields of application, including high-tech research laboratories and industrial development sites. The company was incorporated in Zurich, Switzerland in April 2008; it is a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). Zurich Instruments launched its first HF2 product series in May 2009. Since that date the HF2 product line has been continuously expanded, with the inclusion of powerful new options which complete the initial offering and provide application specific functionality.
