Interview: Ron Alexander

How and when did you join Zurich Instruments?

I am from Louisiana, where I also attended Southern University and A&M College. I then moved to Harvard University for my PhD in physics, studying applications of digital holographic microscopy as well as low-temperature physics.

I joined Zurich Instruments after finishing graduate school in 2020. I wanted to do something that allowed me to leverage my scientific skills while interacting closely with academia. I like living near Cambridge, so Zurich Instruments USA's location was also ideal for me.

What does your job look like, and what is the most important aspect of it?

I am a member of the USA division of our Marketing and Sales team. We handle the needs of customers before and after a sale. We are currently a small team, but we are growing.

My responsibilities included being the first line of contact for a user looking for a measurement solution or for support after receiving their instrument. I also am responsible for reaching out to researchers for proactive business development.

The most important part of my job is being able to relate to our users to understand their technical needs while providing excellent support. Having access to experts in the field was a valuable resource during my career as a scientist, so I get to be that reference for our customers now.

What is the most memorable Zurich Instruments moment that stayed with you?

At the moment, my favorite memory is our effort to move into our new USA office. We have not had much time to connect in person as a team during my time with the company, so it's nice to see how good-natured all of my colleagues are and how we get along well in a more casual setting than an online meeting.

How do you spend your free time?

My hobbies are baking and playing videogames. For my current passion project I am working on perfecting my sourdough breads and viennoiserie. I also find some time to visit escape room games and build hobby electronics.
